A fund-raising gala concert titled A Night at the Opera will take place at the Baxter Theatre on Saturday July 20, at 7.30pm, ahead of the Opera Voices of South Africa International Singing Competition. The audience will be treated to arias, duets and excerpts from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and more. Performing will be sopranos Goitsemang Lehobye and Nozuko Teto, mezzo-sopranos Violina Anguelov, Bongiwe Nakani and Ane Pretorius; tenors Makudu Senaonana, Sipho Fubesi and Owen Metsileng; and bass Msimelelo Mbali. There will also be an appearance by Menzi Mngoma, the recently discovered opera singing Uber driver. The concert is hosted and presented by Njabulo Madlala and accompanied by operatic maestro, Kamal Khan, who formerly headed the Opera Department at the University of Cape Town based South African College of Music. Tickets for the gala fund-raising concert cost from R100 to R250 through Webtickets or Pick ‘n Pay stores.
